About Hawaii

The Hawaiian Island chain was actually formed by erupting volcanoes over the past 6 million years. It is hypothesized that the first inhabitants of the Islands were Polynesian immigrants who probably traveled to Hawaii in wooden canoes from the Tahitian islands. Captain James Cook first discovered the Islands in 1778 and soon European explorers were flocking to the islands. Many years later, on August 21, 1959 after much controversy Hawaii was admitted to the United States as the 50th state.
